Austintown man indicted on charge of corpse abuse

YOUNGSTOWN — Jamey E. Neeld, 44, of North Meridian Road in Austintown, was indicted Thursday on misdemeanor charges of abuse of a corpse and failure to report knowledge of a death in a July 23 incident in Austintown.

Neeld was charged Oct. 4 with felony abuse of a corpse and misdemeanor failure to report a crime or death and misdemeanor unlawfully disturbing a body in Mahoning County Area Court in Austintown, according to court records.

Those charges were bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury Dec. 11 after Neeld waived a preliminary hearing in the area court. But on Thursday, the grand jury indicted him on the two misdemeanor charges and not a felony. The case returns to the area court, where he could get jail time, but not prison, if convicted.

A police report states that Austintown police were called to Neeld’s home in the Austintown Studio Apartments because a person was reporting that a woman was unresponsive in the stairway near an apartment.

When an officer arrived, he found the woman face down in pajamas with her feet in the stairway door entrance. The officer found that the woman was not breathing and was very cold to the touch. Ambulance personnel pronounced the woman dead.

An officer spoke with tenants and was advised by one tenant that he or she saw Neeld dragging the body by the feet into the hallway and asked Neeld why he was doing this and then called 911. Neeld told police he and the woman had dated, but they had stopped dating recently.

The woman’s death was later ruled accidental, according to the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office.
