Contractor has February hearing regarding probation violation
YOUNGSTOWN — John P. Bartos III, 42, of Valley View Drive in Boardman, who was arrested Dec. 21 and charged with misdemeanor domestic violence, was released from the Mahoning County jail Friday but faces a probation-violation hearing Feb. 7 in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
Bartos appeared before Judge Maureen Sweeney in common pleas court Friday. Sweeney set a bond of $5,000 and ordered that Bartos have no contact with a specific person.
Bartos is a local home remodeling contractor who was convicted in March in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court of 11 counts of felony theft, six counts of theft from a person in a protected class and one count of grand theft and was sentenced to four years of probation, 100 hours of community service but no prison time.
His attorney told Judge Sweeney in March that Bartos paid back $103,000 to repay all of the 25 customers he owed money to in Mahoning County. He also had charges in other counties for similar issues.
The domestic violence charge was filed after a Dec. 21 incident in which he is accused of waking up his estranged wife and assaulting her in her home in Boardman. Court records indicate she filed for divorce from him Oct. 8.
Bartos said in March that personal and business mistakes led to his criminal charges. Bartos was accused of accepting payments from customers for work and materials not provided — in one case, $8,000 worth.
As a result of Bartos’ new charges, Mahoning County prosecutors filed a motion Friday to “extend or revoke” Bartos’ probation, which is currently in effect until March 28, 2028.
