Hearing waived in robbery

CANFIELD — Trey D. Bell, 34, of Pittsburgh, waived his preliminary hearing Friday in Mahoning County Area Court in Canfield on charges of aggravated robbery, kidnapping, receiving stolen property and possessing criminal tools for allegedly robbing the AT&T store in Oakmont Plaza in Columbiana Dec. 27.

His case has been bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury, and he remained in the Mahoning County jail Friday afternoon in lieu of $25,000 bond.

If he is able to post bond, he will be required to be outfitted for electronically monitored house arrest and have no contact with the AT&T store or the victim of the robbery, according to court documents.

A co-defendant, Kenneth Littlejohn, 36, of Ambridge, Pa., also had a hearing Friday morning in the same court and entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge of misdemeanor receiving stolen property.

The charge was filed as a felony offense, according to court records.

Canfield Area Court Judge Molly Johnson sentenced Littlejohn to 18 months of probation and 180 days in the Mahoning County jail with all 180 days suspended. He was fined $275 plus court fees and $180 in probation fees. The total is $597. A felony charge of possessing criminal tools was dismissed in exchange for Littlejohn’s guilty plea.

The Columbiana Police Department released a report on the robbery Friday, indicating that a man entered the store in the Oakmont Plaza at 917 state Route 46 with a handgun, mask and backpack, robbed the store of electronics then fled out the back of the store.

The robber took the employee’s cell phone and ordered the safe to be opened. After the safe opened, the suspect filled the backpack and a grocery bag with electronics and “petty cash,” the report states. A witness saw a white pickup truck leaving the area at a high rate of speed.

A call to police was made at 6:55 p.m. By 7:08 p.m., the store was “pinging” the stolen items, and a location at the Davis Hotel on Market Street in North Lima was identified, according to a police call log.

At the motel, a clerk said two men were in a room there and were using a white pickup truck with Pennsylvania license plates parked there. While surveilling the location, a clerk let law enforcement know one of the men asked for a taxi company phone number.

Officers called the men to come out of the room, and Littlejohn came out and identified the other man in the room as “Trey.” Officers in the back of the motel observed a man “going around to different semi trucks in a suspicious manner.” Officers then detained him. He was wearing a green hat that “could be the same as the surveillance video from the store,” the report states.

A state trooper said the man refused to identify himself or talk, but did have an ID in his pocket identifying him as Trey Bell. An officer found a black hooded sweatshirt and a bag full of phones in a bag tucked behind the cab of a semi-truck parked near the motel.

The sweatshirt and a neck gaiter found inside of it matched items from the video of he AT&T robbery, the report states. Also found in the bag was a yellow Giant Eagle bag that was used in the robbery, the report noted. An extensive search was conducted for a firearm, but none was found.

Officers from several agencies participated in the arrests, including Beaver and Springfield townships, Columbiana and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The Oakmont Plaza is located within the city of Columbiana, which has a portion within Mahoning County, which is why the Beaver Township Police Department is listed as the arresting agency for the case and why the charges were filed in Mahoning County.

The Facebook page of the Allegheny County, Pa., Police Department first reported a week ago that Bell was in the Mahoning County jail, saying Bell was wanted in connection to the robbery of the T-Mobile store in Crafton, Pa., near Pittsburgh, and that Bell was taken into custody Dec. 28 in Youngstown.

That agency did not mention that Bell’s arrest was related to a separate robbery allegation from Columbiana. But the Vindicator’s print partner, the (Lisbon) Morning Journal reported Monday that Bell and Littlejohn were charged in the Columbiana case, in addition to being suspects in the Crafton, Pa., robbery.
