Hubbard looks into waterline breaks

HUBBARD — City water department officials have issued an alert stating they are taking care of water main breaks affecting residential areas of the city Wednesday afternoon.

Service Superintendent Kevin Lyden clarified that the breaks, which happened on Burdie, Saul and Fairchild drives, Grandview Avenue and Center Street, were mostly “small, isolated” breaks caused by cold weather and involved 6-inch mains.

Lyden said they had one pop in the morning. Another popped a little later in the early afternoon.

With an impending cold snap in the weather forecast, Lyden said nothing can be done by residents.

“There’s really not anything you can do as far as a water main break. With the freezing and thawing, sometimes the ground heaves and it causes them to snap,” Lyden said. “If after a water break, we flush the lines and if you get some discoloration, just open up your spigot (and) run it for a while. It’ll cycle through and clean up.”

The alert stated that only a small number of homes on each street might be impacted by the breaks.

If residents want to boil water before cooking, they can, but there is no active boil alert, the alert states.

Starting at $2.99/week.
