Man gets 6 to 7.5 years in shooting death
YOUNGSTOWN — Talim D. Mumin, 22, of Compass West Drive in Austintown, pleaded guilty Monday in the Sept. 8, 2023, shooting death of Vincent Tarver, 22, at the Compass West Apartments and got 6 to 7 1/2 years in prison.
Mumin pleaded guilty Monday before Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Maureen Sweeney to charges of complicity to voluntary manslaughter and complicity to felonious assault with two gun specifications. He was indicted on the more serious charges of murder and felonious assault.
Austintown police said the shooting resulted from an alcohol-fueled argument. Tarver’s girlfriend apparently was among a group of people at the apartment complex Sept. 8, and she called Tarver to come to her aid after getting into a confrontation.
Austintown police said that when Tarver arrived, he got into a fight with members of the group, and Ethan Richmond allegedly shot him and his girlfriend during a scuffle.
Austintown police said Talim D. Mumin, and his brother, Tylan D. Mumin, 18, were accused of moving and attempting to hide the murder weapon from Tarver’s killing, which police later found in an Austintown home. In addition to the Mumin brothers and Richmond, prosecutors said a juvenile girl also was charged with evidence tampering.
Rob Andrews, assistant county prosecutor, told the judge Monday that Talim Mumin’s plea agreement reflects that he “was not the shooter. The shooter is Ethan Richmond,” who “agreed to cooperate,” Andrews said.
Andrews said now that Talim Mumin’s case is concluded, he believes Richmond, 18, of Austintown, will enter a guilty plea. Richmond is expected to “receive a longer sentence than” Talim Mumin, Andrews said. Talim Mumin “was complicit” in Tarver’s death and the shooting of Tarver’s girlfriend, Andrews said.
Andrews said the prosecutor’s office tried to contact Tarver’s family, but it has no current phone numbers or addresses for Tarver family members and could not contact them despite “numerous attempts.” Andrews said the victim of the attempted felonious assault, Tarver’s girlfriend, “is in agreement with the sentence.”
Mumin did not speak prior to learning his sentence, which was jointly recommended by the prosecution and defense.
Richmond was 17 when he was arrested during the summer of 2023, accused of shooting Tarver to death and also shooting Traver’s girlfriend, wounding her.
Richmond is indicted on one felony count each of voluntary manslaughter and felonious assault, each with a three-year firearm specification. His case was bound over to common pleas court by Mahoning County Juvenile Court Judge Theresa Dellick in April 2024.
Tylan Mumin pleaded guilty to two felony counts of obstructing justice and got two years of probation.
