Man, woman, 5 pets escape city house fire
YOUNGSTOWN — A man and woman escaped a fire in their home on East Judson Avenue at 3:08 a.m. Wednesday that caused $15,000 in damage to the home and $5,000 to its contents.
The residents said they do not have homeowner’s insurance, but a Youngstown Fire Department report states the South Side home is salvageable. The residents were waiting for help from the American Red Cross when firefighters left the scene, a Youngstown Fire Department report states.
When firefighters arrived, smoke was coming out of the house, and the two occupants had evacuated. Firefighters entered the structure and found only light smoke, no fire, in the stairway and second-floor bedroom.
“Pike poles” were used to locate and expose the fire while the five pets in the house were rescued by firefighters. Once the fire was exposed, it was extinguished in the rafters above the first-floor bedroom.
The report states that the fire appeared to have started in a void space in the wiring that extended from a light. The wiring insulation was burned completely away on multiple wires, but the lines remain energized. The power to the house was left off, and further investigation was going to take place Wednesday, the report noted. The home is not livable until the wiring is fixed, the report states.
