WHAT: City council meeting Monday.
PRESENT: Reynald Paolone, John Moliterno, Lily Martuccio, Keith Schubert, Thomas Grumley, Mark Standohar, Jeff Kay and Mayor Mark Zuppo.
ABSENT: Sam Zirafi.
Council:
•Announced officials from Columbiana will attend a future meeting to discuss how they developed their downtown area, which Girard wants to do. Zuppo said a committee is being formed to focus on this.
•Heard from Zuppo there will be a meeting in Niles Feb. 12 of mayors from Cortland, Girard, Hubbard and Niles regarding the awarded CHIP housing improvement grant being shared among the four cities.
•Approved applying to participate in the America 250th celebration, which is being held in 2026 to mark the country’s 250th birthday.
•Heard from Zuppo of plans to look at a skating rink, community message board, gazebo, farmers market and summer festival for the city this year.
•Heard from fire Chief Jim Petruzzi that with the Sunday morning death of a young child in a Youngstown house fire who hid in a closet, he recommends families discuss escape plans to get out of a house if there is a fire.
