Salem man killed in collision with Norfolk Southern train

COLUMBIANA — A Salem man is dead following the collision of a train and vehicle in Columbiana on Friday morning.

Nickolas Thompson, 45, was killed after reportedly attempting to go around the gates at the Pittsburgh Street crossing just before 6 a.m.

According to a news release issued by the Columbiana Police Department, officers received the call from Norfolk Southern regarding a vehicle that had been hit and came to rest just east of the crossing.

Within four minutes, investigators were on the scene, where Thompson was pronounced dead by the Columbiana County Coroner’s Office.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the railroad gates were down, and Thompson went around them and was struck by the eastbound Amtrak train.

Police Chief William Myers said the investigation is ongoing, and a report will be available once complete.

More than 100 people were on the Amtrak passenger train.

The train was coming from Chicago. Its next stop was in Pittsburgh on its way to Miami.
