Troubled downtown Youngstown bar faces eviction lawsuit

YOUNGSTOWN — A downtown bar that was the subject of a nuisance lawsuit by the city of Youngstown and lost its liquor license at one time faces an eviction lawsuit by its landlord over accusations of failure to pay rent.

Erie Terminal Place filed the lawsuit in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court against The Social Bar, which is on the ground floor of the building at 112 W. Commerce St., contending the business owes more than $10,600 in back rent.

The Social’s rental agreement calls for it to pay $3,476.45 per month.

Gregg Rossi, Erie Terminal’s attorney, said his client is seeking to evict The Social and collect back rent, which continues to increase with each passing month.

A Sept. 10 notice to serve The Social by certified mail about the violation of the lease was returned as “vacant” and “unable to forward,” according to the lawsuit.

The Social has since been served with the lawsuit, Rossi said.

The Social’s managing members could not be reached to comment.

The Social signed a lease Sept. 30, 2020, for the space for the period between Oct. 1, 2020, and April 30, 2026. The business opened Oct. 31, 2020.

The Social was shut down Aug. 26, 2021, after the city declared a nuisance and boarded it up.

The city complaint in common pleas court stated in the preceding six months that Youngstown police issued several criminal complaints against The Social including four for serving minors, four for disorderly conduct by way of intoxication, three for possession of marijuana, four weapons charges, five for assaults and five for fighting or altercations among patrons.

The city dropped its nuisance lawsuit against The Social shortly after the business lost its liquor license on Dec. 3, 2021.

The Social obtained a liquor license and reopened in July 2022.

Starting at $2.99/week.
