Weathersfield plans for veterans banner program

WEATHERSFIELD — The township has established a new program to honor and showcase veterans with banners at the township park.

Trustees at their meeting Tuesday approved the annual veterans banner program to honor the sacrifice and service made by veterans who have served, are still serving or who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the nation.

The idea came several months ago from Trustee Ed Whittaker, who suggested the banners as a way to commemorate the service and commitment of veterans.

He said the program will allow for the installation of up to 48 banners on the light poles in the park each year. The banners will display the name, photograph, branch of service and other details of the honored veterans.

Officials said the program will operate at no cost to the township. The cost of the banners will be covered by the participating family or sponsor, ensuring the program remains financially sustainable.

Whittaker said detailed guidelines, including banner specifications and submission deadlines, soon will be made available to the public. The township will oversee the administration of the program, including the application process and coordination of the banner installation.

“The annual veterans banner program will serve as a highly visible expression of the township’s appreciation for its veterans, providing a unique opportunity for families to honor their loved ones and for the community to reflect on the sacrifices made in service to our nation,” Whittaker said.

Trustee Chairman Steve Gerberry said he liked the idea when Whittaker first proposed it.

“This is a great program. The banners will look awesome at the park,” Gerberry said.

In other business, the township approved a $150,000 American Rescue Plan agreement with the county commissioners to construct four pickleball courts and related improvements at the park.

Trustees also approved police Chief Mike Naples to enter into an agreement with Ron Crumb of Austintown for technical assistance in applying for various grants for the police department.

Naples said the department plans to seek different grants with Crumb assisting.

Starting at $2.99/week.
