Woman accused of punching child
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN — Deena Rivers-Stewart, 40, was arraigned Wednesday in Youngstown Municipal Court on misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor domestic violence after she allegedly punched her “juvenile” child in the face early Wednesday morning.
Police were called to a home on Mabel Street on the South Side at 12:47 a.m. regarding a juvenile who allegedly was assaulted by his or her mother.
When officers arrived, the juvenile answered the door. The juvenile had a bloody nose and lip and advised officers his or her mother was upstairs sleeping.
The juvenile said his or her mother picked the juvenile up from an aunt’s house on the South Side, and “on the way home she punched him in the face,” the report states.
The juvenile said he or she sent an image of his or her bloody face to the juvenile’s grandfather, and the grandfather called police.
Two officers went to Rivers-Stewart’s bedroom and found her “passed out” in the bedroom. Officers woke her up and advised her she was under arrest for domestic violence and child endangering and took her to jail. Another officer came to the scene and photographed the juvenile’s injuries. The juvenile was released to a named person who apparently was a relative after an officer spoke with the help hotline for Mahoning County Children Services.
The juvenile, whose age was not given, “appeared to have only minor injuries to his or her lip / nose,” the report states.
Rivers-Stewart remained in the Mahoning County jail Wednesday evening in lieu of $10,000 bond, according to jail records. Her next court hearing is 11 a.m. Feb. 3.
