Woman who gave gun to another enters plea

YOUNGSTOWN — Lizette A. Salas, 21, who gave the gun to a co-defendant who fired it into a Youngstown apartment complex in December 2023, pleaded guilty Monday to a reduced charge of unlawful transactions of weapons and will be sentenced at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 7.

Marty Hume, county assistant prosecutor, said the prosecutor’s office will not make a specific recommendation on the sentence Salas receives, leaving it up to Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge Anthony Donofrio to decide. Salas could get up to 18 months in prison.

The elements of the offense Salas committed are that “no person shall recklessly sell, lend, give or furnish a firearm to any person who is prohibited” from possessing one because of intoxication, Hume said.

Salas was headed for trial Monday morning on charges of improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation or school safety zone, a gun specification and a second gun-related charge, but her plea eliminated the need for a trial.

Salas’ co-defendant, Phil-Lysha Cummings-Wesson, 21, was sentenced to 21 months in prison Dec. 12 after she pleaded guilty to discharging a firearm on or near prohibited premises and a gun specification.

Cummings-Wesson got credit for 130 days already served in the county jail, according to prison records, and is scheduled for release from prison or parole May 24, 2026.

Cummings-Wesson fired into a habitation in the Valley View Estates apartments on Tyrell Avenue on Youngstown’s West Side Dec. 4, 2023, prosecutors said. No one was injured. Salas gave the firearm to Cummings-Wesson before she fired it, prosecutors said.
