Felony charges dropped after accused man dies
BOARDMAN — A local man facing felony drug charges and another related count has died.
A filing on Wednesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court shows that the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office has dropped three felony counts against Jermaine E. Young, 32, of Youngstown, after Young died Feb. 5.
Prosecutor Lynn Maro said she does not know the cause of Young’s death.
Court records show Young was charged with two counts of possession of drugs or drug abuse instruments — a fifth-degree felony, and one count of tampering with evidence — a third-degree felony. The case was bound over from Mahoning County Boardman Court to Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Jan. 28.
A Liberty Township police report states that Young called police to the Days Inn in Liberty on Jan. 11 to report his car and wallet missing and that the suspect was trying to use his credit and debit cards around Youngstown.
The report states Young was robbed by a woman he had stayed with in the motel room the night before. He said he received fraud prevention notifications from his bank about attempted purchases at Gateway Gas and Food Mart on Market Street and Burger King.
Liberty police found that Young had several felony warrants from Boardman, so they arrested and transferred him to Boardman’s custody.
A Boardman report states that Young was taken into custody in connection with a Dec. 28 incident in the area of Woodlawn Avenue and Sheridan Road. He was found in possession of drugs after several residents in the area complained of him knocking on doors and ringing doorbells.
The report states one man caught Young on his Ring doorbell camera taking drugs out of his pocket and trying to hide them on the man’s porch when police arrived.
Court records show Young was free on a $7,500 bond at the time of his death.
