Mahoning case reopened following Liberty traffic stop
LIBERTY — A year-old Mahoning County robbery case was reopened after Liberty police arrested a Youngstown man with an active warrant during a traffic stop Monday afternoon.
James Riley, 74, was arrested on a breaking and entering warrant through the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office and a fresh drug paraphernalia charge.
According to the police report, an officer was on patrol traveling south on Belmont Avenue when he noticed a green Chevrolet Silverado pass by, making an “unusually loud” noise. The officer noted the vehicle’s exhaust pipe was emitting dark smoke and he couldn’t see a license plate on its rear, although he later noticed a temporary tag in its rear window upon pulling it over, according to a police report.
When speaking to Riley, the officer noticed several pieces of an item associated with drug use in the center console.
The officer also observed severe clinical symptoms of drug use in Riley, but when he asked if he had anything illegal in the vehicle, Riley said he didn’t. However, he admitted he had a crack pipe in his coat pocket, which the officer observed had heavy narcotic residue on it.
Upon arresting Riley, the officer learned of his active burglary warrant and a suspended license. A search of Riley revealed a small plastic bag with a white substance in it resembling crack, and a search of the truck revealed two glass pipes with narcotic residue in the center console cup holder, the report states. Another crack pipe with residue also was found under the passenger seat, but it was believed to belong to the vehicle’s passenger — Sandra James — who was issued a criminal summons for drug paraphernalia after she revealed a digital scale with drug residue on it.
Riley is set to appear in Girard Municipal Court for his drug paraphernalia charge March 4. He’s set to appear for a pretrial for his reopened breaking and entering case March 25, Mahoning County Common Pleas Court records show.
