New dad leads Boardman police on chase, flees after crash
BOARDMAN — Police are still searching for a man who led them on a chase Wednesday evening, but they may not have to look very hard.
A woman told police that the SUV involved is hers and the man who was driving it is the father of her sister’s newborn child.
A Boardman police report states that on Wednesday about 6:45 p.m., police began to pursue a black Infiniti EX35 after it allegedly was driving down Market Street with no headlights in dark, rainy conditions, and failed to use a turn signal when it turned slowly onto McClurg Road, by St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital.
The report states that after the officer turned on his lights and siren, the vehicle proceeded slowly down McClurg toward South Avenue, failing to stop. The Infiniti allegedly passed through the intersection at Southern Boulevard without heeding the stop sign, then picked up speed to about 40 mph.
When it reached South Avenue, it allegedly made a left turn onto South Avenue from the right lane. It picked up speed on South Avenue as well, failing to maintain lanes or use its signal. When it reached U.S. 224, it allegedly turned right from the through traffic lane, nearly hitting a vehicle in the curb lane.
The report states that on Rt. 224, the vehicle picked up speed to about 60 mph and used the center turning lane to pass other vehicles. When it reached North Main Street in Poland, it made a left turn on a red light and continued a short way until stopped traffic brought the chase to a halt.
The Infiniti allegedly struck a white pickup truck and the driver got out of the car and fled through a yard in the 300 block of North Main Street, near Island Drive.
The report states the man left the car in drive and it coasted off the road into a driveway and hit a parked car.
Despite a broad search of the area, using a police dog provided by Springfield Township Police, officers were unable to locate the man.
While searching near the Infiniti, police found a phone and two forms of identification that both fit the suspect.
Shortly after the chase ended, as police were searching for the man, the vehicle’s owner arrived and told police that the man was her sister’s baby’s father and that he had been on his way to the hospital because her sister called to say she was in labor.
