Possible shooting reported on South Side
Police also looking into attempted burglary in the area
YOUNGSTOWN — Two reports from locations near each other on West Ravenwood Avenue on the South Side Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning indicated a possible shooting and an attempted burglary.
The shooting report was from 2:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 600 block that involved a “report of a shooting” and multiple ShotSpotter notifications, but no confirmation by officers that anyone had been shot, according to police.
ShotSpotter notifications alert Youngstown police to gunfire on the city’s South Side.
A 911 caller indicated that “the unknown victim(s) fled northbound on Glenwood, possibly heading toward” St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, according to a Youngstown police report.
Three police officers arrived in the area “quickly,” and they canvassed the area looking for a crime scene. The report does not indicate that they found anything to substantiate the alleged shooting.
At 4:09 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, a person called 911 from a location in the 300 block of West Ravenwood near Hudson Avenue to report a possible burglary in progress, stating that the person saw a male exit a black GMC sport utility vehicle in the street in front of a vacant lot and walk toward the rear door of the caller’s residence.
The male was tall and skinny and wearing a black ski mask. He then went to the front door of the home and tried to open it, but he was unable because it was locked. The caller heard banging coming from the front door area, the police report states.
The caller said he or she yelled to the suspect, saying the resident “had a firearm, and the unknown suspect fled off the front porch,” then got back into the vehicle and drove east down West Ravenwood.
A Youngstown police officer saw fresh footprints leading from the area where the vehicle was parked to the back of the home, but there was no damage to the rear door. The officer did see damage to the door knob and deadbolt lock on the front door. It appeared it was struck with a sledgehammer or something similar, the report states.
While an officer was completing a report on the attempted break-in, another 911 call came in, indicating the same male had returned, parked in the same place, got out of the same vehicle and this time took a photo of the residence before driving off again, the report states.
This time two other people were inside the vehicle, the caller said.
