HOWLAND — The Trumbull County Republican Party’s executive committee nominated Robert Carr of Fowler as the candidate to serve on the Trumbull County Board of Elections.

The meeting took place Thursday at the party headquarters after concerns were raised that the initial process a few weeks before the vote was not done properly. Carr is a local businessman who owns an insurance agency.

“I am excited about this. This is a great opportunity. This is my first-time running,” Carr said. “A few people suggested I run, and I decided to go for it.”

Julia Shutt, chairwoman of the Trumbull County Republican Party, said Carr is the nominee as one of two Republican members on the board, and has to be approved by the Ohio Secretary of State. That should happen in seven to 10 days, Carr said.

Carr served as interim Trumbull County Republican Party chairman after former chairman Kenneth Kline resigned.

In addition to Carr, also running for the nomination for the seat were former Lordstown Mayor Arno Hill, the incumbent member, and former commissioner Niki Frenchko.

Shutt said the meeting was ordered to correct an error of the process previously.

She said there were two rounds of voting with Carr and Hill tied in the first round and then Carr receiving votes from 21 of the 40 people in attendance.

“I am excited that Robert Carr won. The people at the meeting spoke and selected him,” Shutt

said.

Marleah Campbell is the other Republican serving on the board of elections along with Hill.

“I was excited to see everything went well. Following the procedures and transparency was what I wanted. My intention was to make sure the process was accurate. I am glad we can move forward,” Shutt said.

She said the local Republican Party will be focusing on “uniting, attracting and promoting local Republicans.”

“I want to see a unified party,” Shutt said.

“We need some changes,” Carr added.
