Senator to run for Ohio treasurer
State Sen. Kristina D. Roegner, a Hudson Republican, said she will run next year for Ohio treasurer.
“It’s been an honor to serve as a state senator,” she said. “I’m very proud of what we have accomplished. From lowering our state income taxes to commonsense regulatory reform, together we have put Ohio on the right track.”
Roegner spent eight years in the state House before winning an Ohio Senate seat in 2018 and reelection in 2022.
She is seeking to succeed Treasurer Robert Sprague, a Republican, who is running next year for secretary of state.
Sprague initially had planned to run for governor but announced Feb. 5 he would instead run for secretary of state and endorsed Vivek Ramaswamy, a wealthy biotech entrepreneur, who is planning to run for governor.
“Treasurer Sprague has served as a model for what Ohioans should expect from our treasurer,” Roegner said.
“I aim to build on his success into the future.”
Sprague’s decision to switch to secretary of state resulted in Republican Niraj Antani of Miamisburg, a former state legislator, pulling out of that position’s race and announcing Wednesday he would instead run for treasurer.
That sets up a Republican primary between him and Roegner.
Antani said: “My team and I have taken the last week to evaluate this new dynamic and unfortunately we see no path forward to victory with Treasurer Sprague in the race” for secretary of state. “While I am disappointed, I am not deterred. For the last decade, I’ve fought against the entrenched establishment who seek to protect the status quo. I will continue to fight.”
Antani spent six years in the Ohio House and then served a four-year term in the Ohio Senate. His district was drawn by fellow Republicans to favor Democrats.
Antani ran last year in the Republican primary for the 2nd Congressional District seat. He finished 10th of 11 Republican candidates.
No Democrat has announced for the state treasurer’s race. A Democrat hasn’t won a statewide executive branch seat since 2008.
