SOUTH SIDE STANDOFF ENDS PEACEFULLY

A man, far left, holds his hands up as he walks down the driveway of a home on Cambridge Avenue near Gibson Street on the South Side of Youngstown on Wednesday afternoon. He came out about an hour after police responded to the home for a man with a gun who would not come out. The man came out just before 2:30 p.m. and was taken into custody. In addition to uniformed Youngstown police officers, other Youngstown officers responded in SWAT gear as the episode unfolded. Cambridge Avenue was closed to traffic between South Avenue and Gibson Street during the episode and reopened a little while after the man was taken into custody. In the minutes before the man came out of the house, various people standing near the police presence who appeared to know the man shouted “He’s coming out” and “He doesn’t have weapons.” Sgt. Jeff Saluga of the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, commander of the SWAT team, said “We were able to talk him out with a negotiator. He came out peacefully.”
