Thieves target Southern Park Mall

Two high-value heists reported in Boardman

BOARDMAN — The Southern Park Mall is the victim of a high-value theft for the second time in as many weeks.

Boardman police are looking for two men after one allegedly stole a gold chain valued at $10,000 from a jewelry store in the mall Sunday afternoon. The suspects are described as black, between 19 and 25 years old, one wearing a puffy black and tan coat, black jeans and red sneakers, and the other wearing a hoodie, backpack, jeans and a facemask.

The police report states employees told police the suspect was in the store earlier in the day, asked to see several items and then left. He returned later with the other man a couple hours later.

The report states the employee pulled the chain out to let the suspect look at it, but pulled her hands back when she noticed the suspect’s hands were trembling. The report states the suspect then reached over the counter, snatched the chain from the employee’s grasp and both men fled down the corridor toward JCPenney.

Police were unable to find either man, but the employees at the store told police they could identify them if they saw them again. Police also obtained several still photos of the suspect from the store’s surveillance cameras.

The report states that the chain is a 10-karat solid yellow gold Cuban link chain. If caught, the suspect will be charged with a fourth-degree felony.

The incident is the second high-profile theft this month. Last week, police responded to another store in the mall after $10,000 worth of eyewear, including a $450 pair of Gucci sunglasses, was reported stolen.

ALSO CAUGHT

Police did get their man in another incident later that day.

The Boardman police report states that officers arrested a man for attempting to steal liquor from Boardman Giant Eagle about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Anthony Michael Welsh, 51, of Struthers, was arraigned by video Tuesday in Mahoning County Boardman Court on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Giant Eagle declined to press charges for theft after police caught Welsh with two bottles of Fireball whisky, valued at $17 each, the police report states.

Welsh was handed over to Campbell police on a warrant for failure to appear on two disorderly conduct charges in Campbell Municipal Court. Welsh has multiple convictions in that court for disorderly conduct, domestic violence, misuse of a credit card and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He also has multiple convictions for domestic violence — and related probation violations — in Mahoning County Boardman, Austintown and Common Pleas courts dating back to 2007, court records show.

Starting at $2.99/week.
