Youngstown man arrested in bizarre car theft

YOUNGSTOWN — Police have arrested a man for an October auto theft that ended when the car crashed, ironically, into a car wash.

Dwayne Bulls Jr., 26, of Youngstown, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of theft and booked into the Mahoning County Jail, where he remains pending arraignment. Court records in the Youngstown Municipal Court and Mahoning County Courts online systems do not indicate when he will appear.

In Ohio, auto theft is a fourth-degree felony unless there are aggravating conditions. Records show Bulls has multiple prior run-ins with the law, including convictions for simple assault, felonious assault and escape.

The Youngstown police report states that while the incident occurred in October, the victim did not sign charging documents against Bulls until January.

The report states the man pulled into a driveway on Mabel Street in Youngstown, close to midnight on Oct. 22, to pick up Bulls. But before the man pulled out of the driveway, Bulls began acting strangely and erratically, screaming at the man to take him home.

The man told police he tried to get Bulls to calm down but Bulls jumped out of the car. The report states that when the man got out of his car to come around and try to speak to him, Bulls jumped back into the car, slid over to the driver’s side, backed out of the driveway and sped away.

The report states that the man used a neighbor’s phone to call police, but when police arrived they did not see him. The report states the man did not contact police again until early January, although he had his car back — much worse for the wear — within the week.

A Boardman police report states that officers responded just after midnight on Oct. 23 — just minutes after the man called to report the car stolen — to a crash at a business on Youngstown-Poland Road.

The report states that police found the man’s Nissan Rogue crashed into the front of the Struthers Auto Spa and it was unoccupied.

The report states police obtained video that showed Bulls exiting the vehicle before it crashed and walking along Country Club Avenue as the SUV continued through the Auto Spa parking lot.

Boardman police stated in the report that after more than a month of follow-ups, they were unable to identify the driver, despite the victim telling them it was Bulls.

The report states that police went to Bulls’ mother’s house, where he lived at the time, and she told them that Bulls told her the victim crashed the car after they were out drinking at a bar and got into an argument.

The Youngstown report states the victim called police Jan. 7 to discuss pursuing charges, came in Jan. 9 to the police station to file the charges and came to Youngstown Municipal Court to sign more paperwork.

The report does not state where or how Bulls was arrested Wednesday.
