2 men on video trying to steal ATM

YOUNGSTOWN — A pair of would-be robbers attached a strap to their vehicle and the front door of a business on Market Street early Tuesday and drove it forward, “shattering the door and frame,” then went inside the business and tried to steal the ATM machine, but were not successful because the machine was bolted to the floor, police said. The pair then fled in the truck.

The call came in at 5:42 a.m. for a front door alarm. When police arrived, the steel security gate was found forced open and the front door shattered out. Officers went inside, but did not find anyone. They contacted the building’s owner, who said the surveillance cameras showed a white box truck with no markings backing up to the front door with a person carrying a dolly.

Two men got out, with one of them cutting the lock on the security gate with a power tool. Sparks emanated from the area where he was crouched down, the video showed. After forcing open the gate, one of the men used what appeared to be a “tow strap” on the front door of the business and then accelerated the truck forward, destroying the door frame.

A man went inside the business and tried to remove the ATM but was unsuccessful. The man then drove the truck out of the parking lot at a high rate of speed at 6:08 a.m., the report states.

The police department crime lab was called out to investigate.
