Alcohol suspected in fatal Springfield crash

Woman and 15-year-old son killed in head-on collision

SPRINGFIELD — A woman and her child are dead after a head-on crash on state Route 170 Monday evening.

A news release from the Canfield post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol states that Angela Brown, 44, of New Middletown, and her 15-year-old son were both killed after a pickup truck crossed over the center line and overturned their Honda Accord. Her other son, 12, remains in critical condition.

The incident occurred about 7:30 p.m. Monday in Springfield Township, just north of New Middletown.

The release states that the driver of the Chevrolet Colorado, Walter A. Bolt, 59, of Struthers, sustained serious injuries. The boys and Bolt were taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, while Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt. Patrick Abel of the OSHP said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, but troopers could not say Tuesday exactly how that determination was made, only that the crash remains under investigation.

“There are no charges pending right now because we’re just working on different avenues for the investigation,” Abel said. “There will be charges, but nothing’s been filed yet.”

Abel said that while the patrol has not run his name through other state databases yet, Bolt does not have prior OVI convictions in Ohio.

Other than a minor misdemeanor charge for property damage in 2007, filed in Struthers Municipal Court, Bolt does not appear to have any prior criminal or traffic offenses in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana or Portage counties.

The release states that Bolt’s Colorado was heading south on Route 170 and Brown’s Accord was going north when Bolt struck Brown’s car and overturned it, causing the Honda to come to rest in the ditch on the east side of the road. The Colorado came to a stop partially off the road.

The release states that neither Bolt nor Brown were wearing their seatbelts. OSHP has not determined if the boys were wearing theirs.

Springfield, New Middletown and Poland police and emergency units responded to the incident.

OSHP expects to have more information about the crash and charges later this week.
