Boardman greets new trustee

BOARDMAN — The township’s governing board is complete once again.

At Monday’s regular meeting, Township Trustees Larry Moliterno and Tom Costello officially appointed Columbiana County Assistant Prosecutor Steve Yacovone to join them on the panel. Yacovone replaces Brad Calhoun, whom trustees appointed earlier this month to replace retired fiscal officer William Leicht.

Yacovone took an informal oath of office from Moliterno, but was properly sworn in Tuesday evening by Mahoning County Boardman Court Administrative Judge Joseph Houser, himself a former trustee and the son of a trustee.

Moliterno said he and Costello interviewed five people for the position after they set up interviews with all six who expressed interest and one failed to show up for the interview.

“After those discussions and some thought, we believe that Steve is the excellent candidate for this position,” Moliterno said.

Moliterno said Yacovone started off in the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office, where he volunteered for a special docket dealing with violent crimes against women and children. He now serves as an assistant prosecutor in Columbiana County.

Moliterno applauded Yacovone’s extracurricular resume as well.

“He teaches at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy, he has volunteered at Big Brothers, Big Sisters, volunteered as a Sunday school teacher, and currently is on the board at Alta Care Group,” Moliterno said. “About a year ago, we appointed him to the Boardman Park Board of Commissioners and apparently he was doing a very good job there as (Parks Board Superintendent) Gabe Manginelli actually sent a letter recommending and supporting Steve as a trustee.”

Yacovone said he wants to continue the work his predecessors have begun.

“Part of what attracted me to this position is the solid foundation that Boardman has with you three, and frankly everyone on this platform here,” Yacovone said. “It showed me the township is going in a good direction. I have a young family, they’re here tonight, and so I want to continue that trajectory for Boardman.”

Yacovone lives in Boardman, with his wife, Kate, a township native, and their two young children, Gracie and Steven.

“I was not a Boardman guy initially, but I came here about eight years ago and fell in love with the township,” he said.

Both Yacovone and Calhoun are filling unexpired terms and will have to run in the November election to maintain their respective seats.
