Get your yard egged for Easter to help Niles girl with rare genetic condition

NILES — An Easter-themed fundraiser is underway to help raise funds for a 6-year old girl with a rare genetic condition in need of a specialized adjustable bed.

Danella Monsman of Warren — with Inspiring a Difference which in the past five years has helped children battling various illnesses — reached out to Tyler Roberts and Alyssa Hutzler of Niles whose daughter Arianna Roberts, 6, has Trisomy 13 and needs the special raised bed of adult size with a special mattress and elevated head and foot rests.

She will be the beneficiary of the group’s Egg My Yard fundraiser on Easter.

Monsman said the bed needed would cost between $2,000 and $4,000.

Monsman was informed about Arianna’s need since the parents take turns staying with her at night by or in the bed.

“One of them has to be with Arianna at night and is the reason for the need for a larger bed. The bed needs to accommodate one of them, and also provide Arianna room to be able to move around comfortably,” Monsman said.

While a nurse does come to the home during the day and on some weekends to assist with Arianna’s care, she does not stay at night when Roberts and Hutzler give comfort care and medication to Arianna.

Hutzler said Arianna is on a ventilator next to her bed 24 hours per day and is unable to walk.

Because of Trisomy 13, Arianna has trouble breathing and deals with respiratory failure with a trachea.

“Arianna is in her bed 90% of the day.” Hutzler said.

Hutlzer said she is thankful to Monsman and others for what they are doing to help Arianna.

Monsman said the bed would need a special mattress since Arianna is in bed for most of the day and the need to prevent bed sores.

“There are mattresses that help with that.” she said.

Hutzler said Arianna is both deaf and blind but enjoys her parents holding her.

“She smiles when we hold her and show her love,” Hutzler said.

Roberts said they have a special swing that Arianna uses inside the house.

Roberts said with Trisomy 13 Arianna has an extra 13th chromosome and needs someone with her at all times. She has beaten the odds by reaching age 6, her parents said.

Roberts and Hutzler said as Arianna gets older her condition will not improve.

Arianna requires 24-hour care and gets nutrition through a feeding tube. She can breathe on her own but also uses a ventilator to help her breathe.

Roberts said his mother, who has received training on proper care of Arianna, will watch her for some part of the day while he or Hutzler run errands or go to needed places.

Hutzler said Arianna is smaller than a typical 6-year old

She said work is being done to get Arianna off the ventilator.

Monsman said she and her crew will be busy placing the eggs in yards at night with more than 700 plastic eggs placed in a yard in Cortland one year.

“We go out at night and put the eggs in someone’s yard. The neighbors have watched us many times no matter where we were,” Monsman said.

She said she has received orders for more than 21,000 eggs.

Monsman has helped other area children in the past five years.

The nonprofit raises money to get assistive equipment for children with disabilities. Some items in the past have included a ramp for a wheelchair and a specialized ramp for a van.

Proceeds from the nonprofit’s 2025 Egg My Yard fundraiser and others throughout the year are going to help get Arianna the bed she needs.

The deadline to order eggs is April 13. If you would like to “Egg Your Yard,” contact Danella or Makenzie Monsman by emailing dmonsman@hotmail.com, or by calling or texting 330-647-0673.

Monsman said in addition to the fundraiser, people can also make donations.

Starting at $2.99/week.
