Girard woman accused of shoplifting at Walmart

LIBERTY — A Girard woman banned from Walmart and Sam’s Club nationwide pleaded not guilty to theft and drug paraphernalia charges at her arraignment Monday.

Trisha Narkum, 38, was charged after being apprehended by Liberty police at the Liberty Plaza Walmart at the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Goldie Road Sunday afternoon.

According to the police report, officers received a call from Walmart staff about two female shoplifters who went past the point of sale with several items and left the premises after employees tried to stop them. Employees said one of the women went into a Ford Escape while the other — later identified as Narkum — left on foot toward a fast food restaurant.

When another officer in the area pulled over the Ford, the driver, Kimberly Narkum, admitted to having an incident happen at the store. She explained that Walmart staff stopped her for eating a piece of chicken without paying for it, but gave it back to them — assuming that it was like eating a loose grape, the report states.

Kimberly said she did not know who Trisha was and she was just helping a “friend” get out of the cold. The officer noted it was 69 degrees outside and placed her in handcuffs as other officers looked for Trisha.

They eventually found Trisha and brought her back to Walmart, where they ran LEADS and found she had active arrest warrants through Niles’ and Girard’s police departments. Walmart employees explained to officers that the women were concealing items in a purse and Trisha tossed it into the Ford when they fled, the report states.

Employees told officers that they heard Trisha say, “I have warrants, don’t have time for this,” while she ran away.

As officers searched Trisha, they located several drug paraphernalia items — unprescribed Gabapentin, a burnt glass crack pipe, a digital scale and a rubber band tourniquet — all of which were deemed illegal contraband and confiscated by officers, the report states.

Both women were told they were banned from Walmart and Sam’s Clubs nationwide, and Trisha was taken to the Trumbull County jail to be housed on her pre-existing warrants, as well as the new theft and drug paraphernalia charges.

Kimberly said officers could check her vehicle for stolen goods from Walmart when asked if she had any in it. The report states they found several stolen items, as well as drug paraphernalia items that included burnt glass crack pipes and a green bag with an empty prescription bottle containing an unknown white residue.

Kimberly told officers she didn’t know the items were in her vehicle and that Trisha had her vehicle all evening, the report states.

Officers returned the stolen goods back to Walmart, but found that some of the items didn’t belong to the store but belonged to a Dollar General in the same plaza.

Kimberly was issued a summons for theft and drug paraphernalia, for which she is set to appear in court today.

Trisha was released on bail Monday and is set to appear back in court for pretrial April 9, according to court records.
