Insight eliminates 88 RN positions
Approximately 150 losing jobs; more cuts expected
WARREN — Eighty-eight registered nurses are among the approximately 150 Insight Hospital and Medical Center Trumbull employees losing their jobs as owner Insight Health System invoked a seven-day workforce reduction and layoff notification.
Staffing at Insight Rehabilitation Hospital Hillside has not been affected, according to an Ohio Nurses Association spokeswoman. The union represents nurses at the Howland facility.
More layoffs are expected to be announced today.
“Insight Hospital & Medical Center Trumbull is taking proactive steps to strengthen its operations and ensure long-term stability to better meet the needs of our patients and the community,” an Insight Health System spokesperson wrote in an email.
“As part of this strategic realignment, a significant number of positions are affected, including a combination of full-time, part-time and furloughed roles. This adjustment aligns our staffing model with the hospital’s evolving focus while maintaining the highest level of patient care.”
The health system did not acknowledge the emails or discuss the number of workers affected.
The notices were directed to workers represented by AFSCME Ohio Council 8 and SEIU District 1199 WV/KY/OH.
Chrissy Lewis, SEIU coordinator for Region 2, provided to the newspaper a copy of the correspondence dated Tuesday. The notice to AFSCME members was dated Monday.
Reductions involving AFSCME members were as follows: registered nurses (88), case manager (6), diabetes coordinator (1), RN charge (1) and RN navigator (1).
The following SEIU-member positions were eliminated: certified occupational therapist assistants (2); exercise physiologist (1); LPN (3); mammography tech (1); medical technologist (7); multimodality tech (3); occupational therapist (2); pharmacist (3); physical therapist (3); physical therapist assistants (1); radiation therapist (2); radiology tech (7); respiratory therapist license limited permit (3); respiratory therapist registered (4); speech pathologist (1); telecom operator (3); ultrasound technologist (3); and vascular / ultrasound technologist (1).
An AFSCME spokesperson declined to comment.
“This transition reinforces the hospital’s strengths and ensures its future as a vital health care provider in the region,” the Insight spokesperson said. “We are positioning Insight Hospital and Medical Center Trumbull for long-term success and sustainability.”
The latest move comes as the health system attempts to resurrect itself following bankruptcy under the Steward Health Care umbrella.
This month, Dr. Gary Goncz replaced Cindy Russo as the hospital’s president. A third-party provider dispute involving Steward Health has halted new patient admissions, except in behavioral health cases.
The hospital’s 24-hour emergency room remains in operation.
All outpatient services continue to be offered. They include outpatient surgery, cardiac cath
procedures, imaging, lab and rehabilitation. Insight Health Center, Austintown, and Insight Health Center, Elm Road, still provide outpatient services.
“Our outpatient services … continue to see high patient volumes and will remain a key focus moving forward,” the Insight spokesperson said. “Inpatient care is also available for select services, including behavioral health, while we optimize our resources to better align with the changing healthcare landscape.”
