Parents can get tool kit to aid in talks with kids about drugs

WARREN — Did you know that when surveyed about the first time they tried vaping, sixth graders in Trumbull County reported their use happened at age 10?

The Trumbull County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition has partnered with Prevention Resources to provide parents with the tools and resources they need to talk to their elementary-age children about the dangers of alcohol and drugs.

The tool kit includes information on the dangers of alcohol, vaping, marijuana and prescription drugs, as well as tips on how to talk to children about these topics. The tool kit is available on the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board website, www.TrumbullMHRB.org, the coalition’s Facebook page and in print.

“An additional tool kit will soon be available for parents of middle and high school students,” said Lauren Thorp, ASAP Project Director.

The toolkit is part of a larger effort by the Trumbull County ASAP Coalition to prevent substance use among young people in Trumbull County. The coalition also provides education and outreach to schools and community groups.

ASAP, a project of the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board, is a coalition that engages in strategic partnerships to solve the community’s substance abuse problems. ASAP membership is free and open to the public. Anyone interested in becoming involved in ASAP or to request more information, call 330-675-2765, ext. 119 or visit www.trumbullmhrb.org.
