Training in animal care starts at MCCTC adult program
CANFIELD — The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center Adult Career Center is launching its new veterinary assistant program, designed to prepare students for careers in the fast-growing veterinary field.
This five-month program provides students with the essential skills to support veterinarians and veterinary technicians in clinical environments. The curriculum covers veterinary fundamentals, animal care, pharmacology, lab procedures, radiology and surgical assisting.
Students will complete 150 hours of in-class instruction, including hands-on training with live animals and diagnostic lab procedures. Additionally, a 100-hour externship offers real-world experience in veterinary hospitals, diagnostic labs and animal shelters.
Upon completion, graduates will be prepared for entry-level positions at veterinary clinics, specialty hospitals and research facilities. Additional career opportunities may be available at animal shelters, pet daycares, boarding facilities, grooming salons, laboratories and zoos. The program also serves as a career pathway for those interested in furthering their education in veterinary technology or other animal-related degrees.
“The veterinary assistant program at MCCTC Adult Career Center is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in animal care,” said Jodi Glass, recruiter and marketing coordinator at MCCTC Adult Career Center. “Through a combination of classroom learning, hands-on training and real-world experience, students will gain the confidence and expertise needed to pursue employment opportunities in this rewarding field.”
Leading the program is Stacy Pierce, an experienced veterinary professional with a passion for education and animal care. She earned her bachelor’s degree in history from Youngstown State University before following her passion for animals and pursuing veterinary technology at Kent State University.
“We are thrilled to have Stacy Pierce leading the veterinary assistant program,” said Mary Mihalopoulos, Adult Career Center Director. “Her experience and passion for both veterinary medicine and teaching will provide students with an outstanding educational experience.”
Enrollment is now open for the spring / summer session. Potential students are invited to explore the program by calling to schedule a tour or by attending the upcoming open house at 6 p.m. April 8 at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center Adult Career Center on Palmyra Road in Canfield.
