Truck damages Poland bridge
Walker Mill Road structure is closed indefinitely

POLAND — A local bridge is closed and freeway traffic reduced to one lane after a garbage truck hit the bridge’s undergirding Wednesday morning.
Ray Marsch, ODOT District 4 spokesperson, said the crash happened about 6 a.m. Wednesday when the vehicle struck the underside of the Walker Mill Road bridge over Interstate 680 northbound.
Marsch said the bridge, built in 1972, is structurally compromised and will be closed until the damage can be repaired. He said crews are still evaluating the extent and cost of the damage.
Marsch said the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the crash, but the patrol could not be reached for comment. It is unclear if the driver or company will be cited for the crash or if they will be responsible for the repair costs.
Marsch said average daily traffic on the Walker Mill Road bridge is about 2,200 vehicles.
“Anyone who travels this route regularly needs to take the detour,” Marsch said. “The detour is South Avenue to U.S. 224 to state Route 170 to North Lima Road.”
The detour is about 4 miles long and takes approximately 10 minutes in ideal traffic conditions.
The crash did not cause any injuries.
