Woman charged with hitting man with a fire extinguisher
YOUNGSTOWN — Valerie Ross was scheduled for arraignment Monday afternoon in Youngstown Municipal Court on misdemeanor aggravated menacing and domestic violence in a Saturday afternoon incident on Miller Avenue on the South Side.
At 3:07 p.m., officers were sent to Miller Avenue for a domestic violence call and found the victim next door. Officers saw the victim to have several bruises on his face that were “symmetrical circles, which are already turning black and blue,” the report states.
The victim said Ross was “beating him up since last night with a fire extinguisher” so he locked himself in the basement. Ross, 39, found a sledgehammer and broke down the basement door, he said. She attacked him in the basement, stomping on his genitals, he said. He fled next door, and someone there called 911 for him, a report states.
While talking to the man, Ross came out of the couple’s home and was taken into custody and placed in the back of a cruiser, the report states. Officers entered the couple’s home and saw damage done to break down the basement door, “along with finding manifestos all over the floor to the residence written in Valerie’s handwriting threatening to kill” the victim, the report states.
In speaking to neighbors, officers were advised that Ross made threats to a man while the man was “waiting for PD, stating I’m going to get a gun out of the house and shoot you,” the report states.
Officers found no firearms, but officers were advised that “last he knew, there were possibly two (firearms) in the basement,” the report states, with the identity of the accuser being blacked out.
Officers were able to “positively ID the fire extinguisher used and the cylinder matching the marks on (the victim’s) face,” the report states.
The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment of his injuries, and Ross was taken to the Mahoning County jail. Her “manifesto” was logged into evidence, the report states.
SECOND WOMAN CHARGED
In a separate incident, Amya Barnette, 20, was charged with misdemeanor assault in a Saturday night incident at the Social nightclub, 112 W. Commerce Street, downtown.
A Youngstown officer was working secondary employment at the Social at 2:24 a.m. and was in his cruiser in front of the club as patrons began to exit and saw a dark-haired woman walk past and punch another woman who was sitting on a bar stool next to the door.
The officer walked toward the location of the assault, where bar security separated the women. “The victim was still sitting on the stool, while the assailant blended into the crowd,” the report states.
A witness said the woman suspect assaulted the woman victim and the suspect was now walking east down the sidewalk and pointed her out to the officer, including her dark hair and green shoes, the report states.
The officer recognized the woman, later identified as Barnette, from seeing her strike the victim, the report states. Barnette told the officer she struck the victim because the victim spit on her and called her a name. The officer detained Barnette.
The victim told the officer that she was talking to the bar’s manager when she was struck in the face. She said the suspect had dated the same man as her. The victim said there was no earlier altercation before the woman assaulted her, the report states.
The bar manager said he had been talking to the woman for about 30 minutes before the suspect walked up and struck the victim, and the assault was “completely unprovoked.” The officer could see swelling and bruising developing over the victim’s right eye.
Barnette was taken to the county jail.
