YSU Kilcawley campaign gets another boost
YOUNGSTOWN — Shelly LaBerto, owner of Tiffany Square Plaza Chick-fil- A in Boardman and a graduate of Youngstown State University, has pledged $100,000 to the Kilcawley: Centered on the Future campaign.
This contribution will support the ongoing revitalization and modernization of YSU’s Kilcawley Center, enhancing the student experience for future generations.
In recognition of LaBerto’s commitment to YSU, a student organization suite in Kilcawley Center will be named in her honor.
“When I was on campus in the late 80s, Kilcawley was where I lived if I wasn’t in class — whether it was studying with friends in the Chestnut Room, Greek Life or other activities,” said LaBerto.
“It was such a big part of my life for those five years at YSU, and I’m proud to support its future.”
“Shelly LaBerto’s gift is a testament to her deep-rooted connection to YSU and the community,” said YSU President Bill Johnson. “Her support will play a vital role in transforming Kilcawley Center, ensuring that it continues to serve as a dynamic space for student engagement and development.”
LaBerto’s journey with Chick-fil-A began at age 16, working at the Southern Park Mall location. She soon embarked on a career path that took her across the country, gaining invaluable experience within the company. After earning a degree in political science from YSU, with a minor in economics and a combined business focus, she was hired for an internship at the Chick-fil-A corporate headquarters.
LaBerto then returned to her roots in Boardman, where she became the general manager of the Boardman freestanding Chick-fil-A location and, in 2023, became the owner of the Tiffany Square Plaza Chick-fil-A location. She now celebrates 42 years with Chick-fil-A.
“I’ve never not been a part of the university,” said LaBerto. “I always donated even if it was small. When I moved back home, I took an active role at YSU. I was on the alumni board for 11 years and served as president for two years.”
“Shelly’s generous gift to the Kilcawley Center campaign is a testament to her many years as an active alumna and her commitment to service above self. Her gift reflects her positive student experience and her desire to give back so tomorrow’s students have a similar experience, and should encourage other successful alumni to consider the same ” said Scott Schulick, chair of the Kilcawley: Centered on the Future campaign.
“Her investment will have a lasting impact on future generations, and we are honored to recognize her contribution through the naming of a student organization suite within Kilcawley Center.”
