Driver of stolen vehicle eludes Liberty police
Staff report
LIBERTY — Police lost track of a stolen sedan during a brief high-speed chase through the township Saturday morning.
According to the police report, officers were notified around 1 a.m. of a stolen Kia Optima with Pennsylvania registration that entered the township.
Officers checked around Monticello Apartments on Monticello Drive and north to Madison Road when they noticed a dark colored Kia traveling west with registration matching the notification. The report states the vehicle began accelerating west on Madison and turned onto Logan Avenue after noticing one of the officers, reaching speeds of approximately 80 mph and were eventually estimated to be “over” 100 mph around Tibbetts Wick Road.
The first officer terminated the pursuit because of the speed and the disregarded traffic control devices, noting the vehicle turned south onto state Route 193 and continued down the road. Another officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but it accelerated to 80 mph and shut its headlights off around Belmont Avenue.
Officers notified the Ohio State Highway Patrol to be on the lookout for the vehicle.
An officer spoke with a female witness, who said she noticed the vehicle going south on Belmont into Youngstown, with its headlights still blacked out, the report states.
