Federal Frenzy grows to 2-day music, arts fest

YOUNGSTOWN — More than 30 acts will perform over two days on five stages for this year’s Federal Frenzy.

Youngstown State University’s Penguin Productions, which produces the annual music and arts festival, announced the full lineup on Thursday, just 15 days before the first band will perform on April 25 at Penguin City Brewery.

This is the 11th year for the festival and the first time it will expand to two days and use two locations. Penguin City, the site for the festival the last two years, will host the first day, and the event will return April 26 to West Federal Street, where the event was held until the COVID-19 pandemic turned it into an online event and downtown road projects forced organizers to look for an alternate location.

“It has been a little more work for us, but nothing we can’t handle,” said Lexie Napolitan, a junior from Hubbard who is the marketing lead for the event. “I think it’s just twice the fun.”

This year’s headliner will be Ultra Q. The band has released three EPs and two albums since 2019. The band finishes a monthlong tour tonight in Boston that included a show earlier this week at Mahall’s in Lakewood. Singer and guitar player Jakob Armstrong is the son of Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong.

Rain Welton, a first-year YSU student from Geneva, served as music coordinator for Penguin Productions and was part of the band selection process.

“We went through and found a bunch of bands that we would absolutely love to have headline for us this year,” Welton said. “One of our members liked (Ultra Q). They told my team, and we gave them a listen, and we’re like, ‘Yeah, these are amazing people.’ Love their music, and so we put in our offer, they accepted, and now they are headlining.”

A full slate of local and regional talent will be featured over two days.

“We had a lot of bands apply this year, which we are so grateful for,” Welton said. “We just went one by one, saying what we liked and what we didn’t like, and then slowly trimmed the bands down from a list of over 100 to just over 30 bands.”

No Funk No Justice will be the headline at Penguin City, and other acts on the Platt! Stage on April 25 will be Late Night Drive, Aairo, Tundra Tuxedo and Outrun Infinity.

Singer-songwriter Aairo, a Warren native who returned to the area in 2022 after stints in Cincinnati and Atlanta, performed outside of Kilcawley Center on Thursday morning to help Penguin Productions draw attention to the lineup announcement.

“A lot of the shows I play around are cover gigs at different restaurants and breweries,” Aairo said. “Getting to play a full set, a 30-minute set of my own music (at Federal Frenzy), it’s an opportunity to show people the music I’ve spent a lot of time working on.”

Ultra Q will play on the main stage at West Federal and Phelps streets on April 26. The ska band Fine Young Men will be direct support to the headliner, and other main stage acts will be Fifth & Aurora, Nineteenth Paradise, Lemuel & Friends, The Velvet Gentlemen, Fake Blondes and Wednesday Demonstration.

The lineup for The Summit.FM outdoor stage at West Federal and Hazel streets will have Anya Van Rose, Hunter Skeens and the Forerunners, November Loop, Sedona, Floco Torres and lovers in reverse.

Indoor stages will be set up at The Federal (with a lineup that includes HeartBreakKings, Master Hand, Royce Anthony, King Tut the Don & Da Bopman, Bury the Pines and Negative Zen) and The Varsity Club (featuring Candace Campana, The Head Trips, Benny Bassett, John Harrow and Blue Chameleon).

Welton said Master Hand is the band she’s looking forward to the most.

“They are a nerdcore, nu metal group,” she said. “I love them. They dress up like Donkey Kong, Mario, Luigi, Nintendo characters. I’m excited to see them.”

Napolitan is looking forward to seeing Sedona again.

“I’ve heard them before at our Fall Fire Fest, and I really liked the energy they bring,” Napolitan said.

Vendor markets and food trucks will be featured both days. With Youngstown’s new DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas) law, downtown bars and restaurants will handle alcohol sales for the April 26 event.

Starting at $2.99/week.
