Liberty says goodbye to longtime administrator, band director
LIBERTY — The Liberty Board of Education accepted resolutions that will have the district saying goodbye to a longtime band teacher and administrator.
The board accepted the resignations of Blott Guy Elementary P-2 principal Michael Palmer and Band Director Michael Summers — both for retirement purposes — at Monday’s regular meeting. Palmer served with the district for 33 years and Summers served the district for 26 years.
Board president David Malone thanked Palmer and Summers for their service as part of his closing remarks.
“They were individuals who interacted on many different occasions because of my own children, so I have personal experience with both people,” Malone said. “My kids are both better off from having those two gentlemen as part of their education.”
Superintendent Brian Knight shared a similar sentiment after the meeting.
“Our district was very fortunate to have both Mr. Palmer and Mr. Summers for a majority of their careers. Mr. Palmer started in Liberty as a science teacher and has made contributions in the classroom, as a coach, and as an administrator,” Knight said. “Mr. Summers, what can I say? He is remarkable. What he does for our students in music is amazing; he has always brought out the best in them.”
Knight added that he wished them both success in the future and that they would have “very difficult shoes to fill” with either role.
