Man, 32, charged in Easter assault on partner
AUSTINTOWN — A local man is charged with a felony after allegedly assaulting his significant other on Easter.
A warrant was issued Monday for the arrest of Delonte J. Windham, 32, on a felony charge of strangulation. He also is charged with domestic violence, a first-degree felony. Windham is on probation after serving three days in jail for a domestic violence conviction in July. He pleaded guilty to that charge and a strangulation charge against him was dismissed.
The police report states that on Sunday, at about 9 p.m., police responded to multiple calls from residents along Kerrybrook Drive about a woman screaming. When they arrived, officers found a crying woman in the 4300 block with a bleeding ear and bruising around her neck.
The woman told police that when she picked up Windham from his mother’s house he accused her of cheating on him because her Facebook page showed that she had one new friend, and he demanded to see her phone.
She told police that when she said she did not add any new friends on Facebook and did not show him her phone, he became “argumentative.” At some point on Kerrybrook Drive, the car came to a stop, and the woman said Windham took the keys from the ignition and withheld them from her. He allegedly told her: “Either give me your phone or I’m going to slap the — out of you and it’s going to be worse than last time.”
The report states she told police that Windham pulled her earrings out, pulled on her face causing bruising and a bloody lip, choked her when she tried to exit the car, and repeatedly slapped her.
The report states that the woman got away when a neighbor approached the car and called out. The neighbor told police she saw the assault after she heard a car horn repeatedly honking and a woman screaming.
The neighbor told police that as she ran down the street toward the car, she saw “a large African American male pushing on a woman” and that Windham told her the woman is his significant other and that she cheated on him. The neighbor said that when she approached closer, Windham took off running.
The report states that the woman agreed to file charges of domestic violence against Windham and police recommended the felony strangulation charge because of the bruising around her neck and her claim that he choked her.
Windham had not been arrested as of Tuesday.
