Man who blamed Jesus for domestic violence arrested again

AUSTINTOWN — A man convicted of beating his girlfriend and blaming Jesus is in jail again, charged once more with domestic violence.

Christopher L. Hyler, 36, of London Drive, appeared by video Wednesday in Mahoning County Austintown Court, where he faces three counts of assaulting a police officer, and one count of intimidation against a police officer, all third-degree felonies; one county of vandalism, a fifth-degree felony; and misdemeanor charges of domestic violence and resisting arrest.

Judge Scott Hunter imposed a total of $31,000 in cash or surety bonds and set a trial date for April 30. Hyler remains in the Mahoning County Jail.

The Salem News reported in 2022 that Hyler was arrested for a parole violation and also had a new charge of domestic violence against him from July of that year. That was after he was sentenced in 2017 to five years in jail for beating his girlfriend in a Jackson Township motel and telling police, “Jesus told me to get the demons out of her.”

When police arrested Hyler in Austintown in the early hours of Wednesday morning, he still wore an electronic monitoring bracelet on his ankle.

The report states that police responded to Hyler’s apartment building shortly before 1 a.m. when his girlfriend called to report that he had beaten her.

The woman told police that the beating happened in a car on Tuesday night, but she was only able to report it after Hyler fell asleep and she could get away from him.

The report states that when police arrived, the woman was found with a bruised left eye that was swollen completely shut, a bruised and bloody lip and road rash on her ribs, hips, and back. The woman told police that she jumped out of the car while it was moving to get away from Hyler as he was beating her. She said he stopped the car and ordered her back into it, and they drove home without further incident.

The report states that before being taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, the woman described the layout of the apartment to police so they could enter safely. And she told police Hyler was highly intoxicated.

Police found Hyler lying in bed, and handcuffed him without immediate trouble. But as they began to escort him outside, he stomped his feet down and pushed back and would not allow them to walk him out.

The report states that when they tried to carry him, he threatened to bite and spit at them. They were able to put him into the back of a police car, but on the way to the station, they had to stop because Hyler began kicking the doors of the car, causing significant damage. He also smashed his head against the partition, causing his head to bleed.

The report states that at the station, he began spitting blood at police, removed a spit shield they put on him and continued spitting blood, and at one point bit an officer on the leg above the knee. The report states that the bite did not break the skin. He also tried to bite another officer’s arm while they tried to restrain him. When the ambulance arrived to evaluate his head wounds, Hyler also spit blood into the face of one of the paramedics.

In Mahoning County in October 2016, a case originating in Austintown was bound over to the grand jury. Ultimately, a charge of kidnapping was dismissed, while he was found guilty of assaulting a police officer, felonious assault, retaliation, vandalism in November of that year.

He also pleaded guilty to failure to comply with police orders in a separate incident in Beaver Township from July 2016, and a charge of obstruction was dismissed.

Court records show that Hyler has many charges and convictions against him in both Columbiana County Common Pleas and Columbiana County Municipal Courts dating back to at least 2006. Earlier charges were for smaller infractions like underage drinking, trespassing and similar misdemeanors. Assault charges and other felonies began appearing in the record around 2016, many for domestic violence, often accompanied by subsequent threats and attacks on police officers.
