MCCTC mourns loss of 16-year-old student
CANFIELD — The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center has confirmed that Brock A. Jones, a 16-year-old New Middletown boy who was killed in a Friday night crash in Portage County, was a welding student at the school.
Jones was a rear-seat passenger in a 2024 Chevrolet Camaro that was traveling southeast on Scotts Corners Road a half-mile northwest of Jones Road in Palmyra Township when it drove off the right side of the road into a ditch, then struck a utility pole, several small trees and overturned, according to an Ohio State Highway Patrol Ravenna Post news release. It called those details “preliminary.”
The single-vehicle crash happened about 10 p.m., about a mile south of Interstate 76 and Mahoning Avenue. The driver and two passengers were transported from the scene by ambulance and were treated for minor injuries, the release states. Brock died at the scene.
On Tuesday, a post on the MCCTC Facebook page stated that the “MCCTC community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Brock Jones, a junior welding student, who passed away in an automobile accident on Friday night. Brock was a bright, hardworking young man with a promising future, and he will be missed dearly by his classmates, teachers and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him,” the post states.
It added that counselors would be available at school “to support students and staff as they process this loss.” Therapy dogs were on campus Tuesday to “offer a peaceful space for anyone in need of comfort or time to decompress.”
The post stated a GoFundMe account has been established to support Brock’s family.
“His sudden departure has left an unfillable void not only in our family but also with his friends, and we are asking for your help to give him the farewell he deserves,” according to the GoFundMe page, which is being organized by Jennifer Prozy on behalf of Brock’s mother.
His obituary states that Brock “was known for his infectious sense of humor, unforgettable hugs, belt buckles and boots.” He “had a way of lighting up any room. He lived his life fearlessly and made it his mission to bring laughter and smiles to everyone around him — a true classic clown.”
The patrol states that the driver of the car was a 17-year-old girl from Deerfield. Others in the car were a man, 18, of Lake Milton, and a girl, 17, of Kent. The release states that “At this time, speed does appear to be a contributing factor in this crash.”
OSHP was assisted at the scene by the Palmyra Fire Department, Edinburg Fire Department, Berlin Fire Department, Portage County Sheriff’s Office, Portage County Coroner’s Office and the Portage County Prosecutor’s Office.
