McDonald updates policy on soliciting

McDONALD – The village has updated its policy on door-to-door soliciting, requiring all peddlers and canvassers to register at the administration building.

Mayor Ray Lewis said the update is for the safety of residents, with door-to-door solicitation permitted between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily.

He said those registering must pay a permit fee and have a background check done. Lewis said school or church groups will not pay a fee.

Lewis said those residents who do not want anyone coming to their home to sell items or services are advised to post “No soliciting” signs or stickers.

Lewis said there seems to be an increase in people going door to door every year.

“This year, we have had more than usual, and they have started a lot earlier. We want to make sure we know who is soliciting in the village, and the police know who they are,” Lewis said.

He said that once people have been checked, they can go door to door.

Lewis said there are different criteria based on what type of group or organization is soliciting.

Also, Lewis said he met recently with Anthony Cafaro Jr., with the Cafaro Company, concerning the empty bank building off Ohio Avenue next to the administration building.

He said Cafaro has agreed to help market and promote the bank property.

“We are all on the same page and want to see someone in that building,” he said.

Lewis said the bank building has been vacant for several years.

In other business, resident Donna Dolsak has donated a scoreboard for the baseball field.

Lewis said the schools, baseball association and the village will work together on the costs to get electricity to light the scoreboard, which should be ready in 2026.

Lewis said the school district is also looking for a new scoreboard at the softball field.

Starting at $2.99/week.
