Police find BB gun on juvenile at library
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN — A juvenile was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center on Thursday afternoon after Youngstown police received a call from a library on Mahoning Avenue regarding a juvenile telling another juvenile he was going to rob a nearby store.
BB guns were later found in the juvenile’s backpack.
The library is called the Michael Kusalaba Library of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.
Police were called at 12:25 p.m. to the library and spoke with a security officer who said the suspect ran outside when he saw a police officer pull into the parking lot.
The officer found the juvenile outside the library with four other juveniles, a report states. The officer asked the boy what was in his backpack, and he eventually admitted he had a BB gun. The officer opened the backpack and saw a long BB gun that was disassembled and a black BB handgun. Officers detained the juvenile while the first officer spoke with witnesses.
One witness said a juvenile ran to him or her in the library and said that another juvenile had stated that he was “going to rob the Dollar General, let’s go.” Staff members of the library were concerned that if the juvenile were not taken to the juvenile justice center, he might come back with a “real firearm,” the report states.
The officer advised staff members that his or her intent was to charge the juvenile with inducing panic. A security officer advised he was gathering security video for police officers. Officers took the boy to the juvenile justice center.
An attempt Friday to learn what specific charge or charges filed was not successful.
