Traffic stops up in Hubbard Township
HUBBARD TOWNSHIP — A police official reported a huge uptick in traffic stops at a regular meeting Tuesday.
While acting police Chief Michael Orr noted a one-crash decrease and a two-arrest increase from last month, he said the department went from 10 traffic stops in February to 57 in March.
Trustee Jason Tedrow, who serves as the police department’s liaison, said the number of stops was something he hoped to see continue.
“It’s not to give people a hard time, and it’s not to write people tickets,” Tedrow said. “There are some issues in some of the neighborhoods that we hopefully want to start working into soon, to address some of the speeding and stuff like that.”
“We want to make sure our officers are active in the community,” he added.
Tedrow also reported that they have completed their interviews for the police chief position, which they formally opened to applicants in February. He said officials hope to complete the selection process by their May meeting.
In other action, trustees:
• Agreed to wait another month on selling a 2014 Ford Explorer. Trustee William Colletta reported they received an offer for $600 — the amount insurance was on the vehicle — and scrapping it would bring $500.
• Approved increasing road appropriations by $18,022 for operating supplies and unexpected salt invoices.
• Approved increasing lighting district appropriations by $12,267 for recent lighting work done by Ohio Edison.
• Approved hiring Nicole Caldwell as zoning inspector for $12 per hour, starting May 1.
• Heard from Trustee Monica Baker that she reviewed the township’s website and compiled a complete list of needed changes, questioning why they had four different phone lines on the website, as well as what server was hosting its software.
• Heard from Colletta that the township was renting a four-ton Hotbox asphalt trailer to fill holes in the township roads, which he deemed to be a more permanent solution. Colletta said he expected township-wide road repairs to be completed in two weeks.
• Approved putting an old road sweeper into surplus.
• Approved hiring Youngstown Fence to install fencing around the township’s recycling area. It will cost $4,290 and will be funded via a grant from the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District.
