NILES — Anthony J. Russo, 102, went home to be with the Lord peacefully in his sleep, at 2:21 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at Continuing Health Care at The Ridge.

He was born Feb. 19, 1919, in Niles, the son of Sandy and Julia Caroppoli Russo.

His beloved wife, Ann L. Salerno Miele, whom he married June 29, 1946, preceded him on May 18, 2009.

He was an officer first class in The United States Navy during World War II. Tony was also a shoemaker and owned and operated Tony’s Shoes on State Route 46 in Mineral Ridge in a building that he built, which still stands to this day. He was also a talented artist and notably was included in the group that re-designed the Trumbull County Flag in 2002. He also enjoyed playing the guitar, camping, and dressing “sharp.”

Anthony will be deeply missed by his family: daughter, Linda and Carl Dennis Zavar of Michigan; granddaughter, Carrie and Patrick Pioch of Michigan; grandson, Brad Russo of Niles; and four beautiful great-grandchildren, whom he loved, Isaac, Oniah and Paisly Russo, and Margot Pioch.

As requested by the family, there will be no calling hours.

Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery, where Anthony will be honored for his military services by The Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard.
