Robert T. Schrum 1938-2022
PINELLAS PARK, Fla. — Robert T. “Tom” Schrum, 84, formerly of Austintown, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2022, while visiting his daughter in Bedford, Ky.
He was the oldest child of Robert and Emily Boyer Schrum and grew up in Austintown. He graduated from Austintown Fitch High School in 1956 and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1958. He served proudly for more than 30 years, attained the rank of chief master sergeant and retired as the Civil Engineering Structural superintendent at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton. During his Air Force service, he was stationed from Limestone, Maine to Puerto Rico, and Alaska to Guam, with several stops in-between. He also served two tours in Thailand during the Vietnam era.
He and his wife, Sharon, retired to Limestone, Maine and he worked another 10 years at S.W. Collins in Caribou, Maine.
Tom was a 31-year member of St. Louis Parish in Limestone, where he was a lector and Eucharistic minister. He and Sharon volunteered with the parish, doing funeral hospitality for several years. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Smart Ricker Chapter 10 in Presque Isle, Maine. He took it as his personal responsibility to ensure that the flag above the local veterans’ memorial was always waving. Growing up in Austintown, he was an avid roller-skater and long-time member of 4-H, with many blue ribbons as proof. He loved spending time in his workshop, crafting woodworking masterpieces and sharing knowledge learned from his father, grandfather and great-uncles with his children and grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sharon Edgecomb Schrum of Limestone, Maine; his children, Patti (James Bynum) Schrum of Bedford, Ky., Tammy (Russell) Adamson of Springfield, Ohio, Tom (Lisa) Schrum of North Las Vegas, Nev. and stepdaughter, Ann Virgin of Frederick, Md.; granddaughters, Jordin and Sydney Schrum of North Las Vegas, Nev.; grandsons, Zachary and Justin Adamson of Springfield; great-granddaughter, JJ Kinney of North Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters, Kathy (Ron) Gerberry of Austintown and Barb (Paul) Metzendorf of Howland; brother, Jim (Cindi) Schrum of Greensboro, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews, who all thought he was the best.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Emily Schrum; and sisters, Ruth Schrum Trask and Diane Schrum.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2022, at St. Louis Church, Limestone, Maine, with reception to follow in the church hall, followed by interment in Maine Veterans Cemetery in Caribou, Maine.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans, DAV or the Red Cross.
