Roger L. Ryan 1946-2024
NILES — Roger Leroy Ryan, 77, passed away Monday evening Jan. 1, 2024, at his residence, which he shared with his cherished niece Kari Ryan.
Roger was born Dec. 25, 1946, in Warren, the son of Edward James and Ruth Sheets Ryan.
He was a 1964 Niles McKinley High School graduate and served honorably in the United States Navy.
Roger was a beloved Niles and Girard community member who always made the best of every situation and lived life freely according to his terms. He loved his neighbors and would give anybody the shirt off his back when needed. He was a kind of man who looked to help people in need.
Roger enjoyed reading literature on diverse topics and could be found most days at the Niles McKinley Library checking out a book or working on the computers. When not tanning in the Northeast Ohio sun, Roger could be found most weeks at local restaurants enjoying a meal with family and friends.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed playing cribbage, gin and many card games.
He was also a rabid college football fan and loved spending his days at the track, speculating on the ponies and watching the games. His family and neighbors will dearly miss him.
Roger is survived by a son, Michael (Theresa) Ryan of Niles; and his daughters, Heidi (Dale) Scanlon of Niles, and Bobbi Jo (Jonathan) Oldaker of Portsmouth, Virginia; four grandchildren, Macie Ryan, Sidnee Ryan, Sierra Ryan and Toni Sisler; brother, Pat (Deborah) Ryan of Champion and sister, Sheila Lucariello of Niles.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024, at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home in Niles.
His burial will be privately in All Souls Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org), 501 Saint Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
