Charles M. Johnson 1952-2024

HUGO, Minn. — Charles McCleary Johnson, 71, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Born Sept. 28, 1952, Chuck was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
Chuck grew up on the West Side of Youngstown and “lived” in Mill Creek Park. His childhood stories were filled with his adventures in and around the park. He was a lifelong resident of Youngstown until his recent move to Minnesota to be near his children and grandchildren. Chuck had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and a love for all music. Hunting, snowmobiling and dirt bike racing were among his favorite activities, always seeking the thrill of adventure and the joy of a road trip.
Chuck was known for his straight-shooting banter and was admired for his unwavering loyalty to his loved ones. His backyard hangouts were a much-anticipated tradition and he took great pride in having the best-looking grass in the neighborhood.
As a grandfather, Chuck’s tenderness shone brightest. A gentle soul with a warm heart, Chuck had a special bond with his grandchildren, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
In his professional life, Chuck followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, dedicating himself to a career in construction. As a skilled plasterer, he went on to successfully own and operate Johnson Exteriors Inc. He was passionate about his work, leaving a lasting legacy in the projects he completed.
He is mourned by his loving wife of 43 years, Margaret Grace McMahon Johnson; his beloved daughters, Melanie Johnson (Corey Valentine) and Mary Phillips (Christopher Phillips); along with his treasured grandchildren, Emerson, Liam, Charlotte, Lauren and Kelsey. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Johnson (Karen Johnson); and his sister-in-law, Beverly Johnson, widow of Thomas Johnson.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Betty and Thomas Johnson; and his brothers, Barney and Thomas Johnson.
Family and friends will be honoring Chuck in a short prayer service. Any contributions are asked to be made in Chuck’s name to Mill Creek Metroparks Foundation memorial page for a hiking trail to be named in his honor.
