John A. Ruggiero 1933-2024

GIRARD — John A. Ruggiero, 90, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at his home.
John was born May 22, 1933, in Girard, a son of the late Dominic Ruggiero and Laura Giammarco Ruggiero. He was a lifelong area resident and left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
After graduating from Girard High School, John pursued his academic aspirations at Youngstown State University, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree. Continuing his pursuit of knowledge, he later achieved a master’s degree in education from Kent State University, a testament to his dedication to learning and growth.
John’s professional career was characterized by his passion for education. For 35 years, he served as a teacher and coordinator at Niles McKinley High School, positively influencing countless students with his wisdom and guidance. Beyond the classroom, he shared his expertise as an instructor at Kent State University Trumbull Campus and Youngstown State University, leaving an enduring impact on future generations.
Devoted to his faith and community, John was a lifelong member of St. Rose Church in Girard, where he attended daily Mass and actively participated in various church organizations. He selflessly served as a Eucharistic minister, funeral server and collection counter, embodying the spirit of compassion and service. John was a member of the Youngstown Vocational Support Society, and also a member of the Catholic Alumni Organization, where he served as national president and vice president.
John’s commitment to community involvement extended beyond his religious affiliations. He was a dedicated member of numerous organizations, including the Slovak Cultural Association, Ohio Retired Teachers, Trumbull County Retired Teachers, Friends of Girard Library, Girard Historical Society, OCCHA – Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispana Americana Inc., Croatian Home St. George Lodge 66 and the Cinquanta Club.
In addition to his many accomplishments and community involvement, John enjoyed walking three miles each day and was an avid traveler who found joy in exploring the world around him. With an adventurous spirit and a thirst for new experiences, he embarked on journeys that enriched his life and broadened his horizons. Among his favorite destinations were the vibrant city of New York and the tranquil shores of Cancun.
John will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, generosity and love for his family and friends. His legacy of service and compassion will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
John leaves to forever cherish his memory his sister, Judy Petrarca of Girard; two nieces, Gina (Jeff) Tabor and Amy (Michael) Quinlan; two nephews, Matthew Petrarca and Louis Ruggiero; and many extended family members and many, many friends.
Besides his parents, two brothers, Louis “Gege” Ruggiero and infant Dominic Ruggiero, preceded John in death.
Family and friends may gather to pay respects 10 a.m. to noon Monday, March 11, 2024, at St. Rose Church 48 E. Main St., Girard, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Jordan Kelly at noon.
Interment will take place at a later date in Girard Liberty Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, John’s family suggests memorial contributions be made to either St. Rose Church or St. Rose School Angel Fund.
