Allen ‘Mitch’ Blazek 1960-2024
LAKE MILTON — Allen “Mitch” Blazek, 64, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024, after a courageous, private battle with cancer.
Known affectionately as “Dad” and “Papa,” Mitch was the son of Joan and the late Allen Ernest Blazek.
Born in Youngstown and a resident of Lake Milton, Mitch was a 1979 graduate of Jackson-Milton High School, where he excelled as a three-sport athlete. After working in Florida early in his life, Mitch dedicated much of his life to the family’s 50-plus years of golf legacy at Lakeside Golf Course. From his childhood and adolescent years to his adult life, he poured his heart into maintaining the course’s beauty. Mitch expected punctuality from all employees — especially his children, nieces and nephews. In Mitch’s book, being on time was considered late.
Channeling his grandfather’s love of golf, Mitch had a golf club in his hands from the time he was a toddler until his final days. He cherished time on the driving range and golf course with his daughter, Taylor, whom he coached to excel in state competitions for the past two years. He also enjoyed watching his grandson Blake play soccer and being entertained by his grandson Parker’s antics.
His happy place was the Florida beach, where he enjoyed the warm sunshine, the sound of the ocean and peaceful relaxation with his family and loyal dog, Ranger.
Christmas held a special place in Mitch’s heart, evident in over-the-top decorations that would make Clark Griswold proud.
Mitch endured a love-hate relationship with the Cleveland Browns. He often threatened to give up on them, but watching and grumbling about the Browns was among his last activities with his family.
He had an infectious laugh and was known for his honesty, humility and hardworking nature. A thoughtful listener, Mitch was the go-to person for advice, earning the coveted “Mitch Approval” from those who knew him. While he could be stubborn and set in his ways at times, he was also quick to share a bright smile and a fun sense of humor. He loved sentimental songs and movies, often making recommendations for family and friends.
Mitch had a remarkable skill for fixing anything and an uncanny ability to predict the weather. He was particular about his work, from cutting the fairways to stringing Christmas lights — he strived for perfection. His signature cool style included sunglasses, a hat, flip-flops or boots, and black clothing, with the occasional splash of red for Ohio State games or Christmas festivities.
Mitch leaves behind his wife, Becky, of 25 years; children, Kristi (Andy) and Taylor; grandchildren, Blake and Parker; mother, Joan; siblings, Melisa (Bart), Michele (Dave) and Mark (Judi); sister-in-law, Theresa Leiter (Matt); along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He joins his father; grandparents; aunts, Roselyn and Dorothy; and cousin, Jason, in eternal rest.
Family and friends will remember Mitch for the warmth and love he brought into their lives at a private celebration of life — in a festive setting with perfectly hung Christmas lights.
The family requests contributions be made in Mitch’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
