Delbert C. Mix 1926-2024

BERLIN CENTER — Mr. Delbert C. Mix, 98, passed away early Thursday morning, Oct. 31, 2024, at Hospice House in Poland.

He was born May 31, 1926, in Deerfield, a son of Walter and Mary Girard Mix.

Delbert graduated from Deerfield High School in 1944 and worked as a heavy equipment operator for A.P. O’Horo Co. for 40 years before retiring in 1989. He also served his country in the U.S. Army, being honorably discharged in 1948.

He married the former Darlene Engle on Jan. 31, 1981, and they shared 43 years of marriage and many happy memories together. She survives him.

Delbert was a member of the Berlin Center United Methodist Church. He was also an active member of IUOE Local 66 Operating Engineers and enjoyed gardening and cheering for the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Delbert’s greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren, and being a part of all of their activities and sporting events. He was a kind, loving husband, father and grandfather; he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Besides his wife, Delbert is survived by six children, Scott Mix of Youngstown, Pamela (Steve) Balent of Newton Falls, Brent Gatrell of Ravenna, Donna (Mike) Shook of North Jackson, Denver Gatrell of Berlin Center and Becky (Brian) Hambrick of Youngstown. He also leaves behind 12 beloved grandchildren, Jacquelyn (John), Joseph (Mandi), Mark (Marauka), Jessica (Ron), Jeff, Nicholas (Katie), Ryan (Jamie), Jarrod (Brianna), Brian (Allison), Morgan,Tabitha and Adam; and 11 great-grandchildren, Emma, Colin, Layla, Hunter, Alivia, Parker, Emerson, Greyson, Penelope, Kamryn and Trent.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Albert, Tom and Wilbur Mix; two sisters, Wilda Oswalt and Arlene Lopez; and a grandson, Sturgis Gatrell.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024, at Lane Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, 5797 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, with the Rev. Russell Libb officiating.

Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2024 at the funeral home.

He will be laid to rest with full military honors in Hartzell Cemetery, Deerfield.
