Doris M. DelFraino 1927-2024
YOUNGSTOWN — Doris Marie DelFraino, 97, peacefully passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024.
Doris, affectionately known as Dorie, was born Sept. 15, 1927, in Auburn, New York. She was the fourth child born to Sam and Christina Onori.
After graduating high school, Dorie relocated with her family in 1946 to Hollywood, California. There, she met a handsome GI, Alfred DelFraino. Dorie and Al were married in July 1948 and together they raised five children.
In 1965, the family moved to Al’s hometown area of Poland. Together they owned and operated a coffee and sandwich cafe, “The Coffee Hut,” on South Avenue for 12 years.
As Al’s health began to decline, Dorie, at the age of 50, went to Choffin School of Practical Nursing. She graduated and worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital for 12 years before retiring in 1990.
Besides being a practical nurse, she was first and foremost, a beloved mother of five, cherished grandmother of six and a very proud great-grandmother of seven.
Dorie was a longtime member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Poland and had many good and loving friends in her life.
Dorie had the most beautiful smile, and it displayed her inside warmth and outside beauty. It shined the biggest and brightest when she was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dorie leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Mark (Lois) DelFraino, Deborah DelFraino and Joseph (Marlene) DelFraino, all of Poland, and John (Melody) DelFraino of Tullahoma, Tennessee; grandchildren, Mark (Lorraine) DelFraino of Frederick, Maryland, Andrea (Philip) Ciarniello of Alexandria, Virginia, Sarah (Jeff) Evans of Erie, Pa., Lisa (Chase) Blisard of Cleveland, Ohio, Jonathan DelFraino of Tullahoma, Tennessee, and Nicole DelFraino of Cleveland, Tennessee. She also leaves her beautiful great-grandchildren, Thomas, Vincent, Anthony, Claire, Penelope, Frank and Samuel. Also surviving is her sister, Josephine Galloway of Hollywood, California, and many beloved nieces and nephews throughout the country.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Al, in 1994; daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Richard Way; brothers, Dominic (Yolanda) and Albert (Toni); and her sister, Margaret (Tony) Mazzeo.
Dorie was an exceptionally compassionate nurse, and in turn, the DelFraino family would like to acknowledge and thank the entire staff at Briarfield Place for the outstanding, kind and compassionate care they gave to our “Sweet Dorie.”
Calling hours for Dorie will be 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2024. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Parish Center, 2729 Center Road, Poland, OH 44514.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations to be made to Iron & String Life Enhancement, 12 S. Phelps St., Youngstown, OH 44503.
