Mary E. Sandy 1936-2024

CANFIELD — Mary E. Sandy passed away Friday, Nov. 15, 2024, at University Hospital in Cleveland, with her daughter by her side.

Mary was born in Youngstown, Nov. 23, 1936, the daughter of the late Philip and Angeline Leombruno Calo. She was a lifelong area resident.

Mary graduated from Struthers High School, Class of 1954, and attended Youngstown State University. She received her B.S. in elementary education in 1968 and went on to receive her M.S. at YSU in elementary principalship in 1980.

Mary began her teaching career in 1955 with the Diocese of Youngstown, teaching first through eighth grades until 1973, and spent 17 years there. She then started her elementary teaching in the Youngstown City Schools for 28 years. She spent 24 years teaching special education, including teaching students who spoke little to no English. During her time spent teaching, she worked with a very diverse group of children.

Mary was the recipient of many honors and awards during her professional career and was a member of several organizations. She was a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma-Beta Pi and the National Education Association.

She continued working in the school system until her retirement in 2001, then took on a role as interim administrative assistant and substitute principal until 2012. Mary continued to work part-time at several local businesses in the area.

She volunteered as a CCD teacher in Catholic schools and was a former hospice volunteer; she was an adult leader for CISV International, traveling abroad for two summers and volunteered at the Sacred Heart Retreat House.

Mary enjoyed playing cards with her friends, and loved to go shopping and to the casino with her daughter and friends. She was a member of St. Charles Church.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Elizabeth Sandy-Kremer of Columbus; her sister, Angeline Henry; and her grandchildren, Billy Kremer and Taylor (Josh) Murphy. She also leaves her great-grandchildren, Lexi, Karli, Luca and Molly; her sister-in-law, Thelma Calo; nieces and nephews, Thomas and Joel Henry, and Alicia Graves, plus Teddy and Angelo Calo; her Leombruno cousins, and many friends.

Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Therese Sandy-Neville; her brother, Philip Calo; and sister, Rita Calo-Stroup.

Friends and family may call 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, at St. Charles Church,

7345 Westview Drive, Boardman, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by the Rev. Msgr. John Zuraw.

Mary gave of herself by donating to LifeBanc.
